Take a good look at that mug. Can anyone really deny that Elvis is one sexy beast?? Based on the swarms of folks who make their pilgrimage to Graceland (second most visited site in the country after the white house) … I think not.
Originally our road trip plans included stopping at large fake dinosaurs and other kitchy roadtrip photo opps but when we realized how many amazing cities we wanted to see, we subbed out roadside attractions for “the stuff that America is really made out of” … i.e. Elvis.
Flash forward to Memphis and there we were: in an air-conditioned tour bus (with a very interesting assortment of fellow fans) wearing audio tour headphones and laminated Elvis passes around our neck, waiting to be corralled through the maze that is Graceland:
If you cant tell from the photos, I thought that this experience was one of our greatest stops yet!
Despite the fact that neither Kate or I are huge Elvis fans, or that his taste isn’t exactly our style, I must admit that this was one of the mornings I felt truly gleeful. Exclaiming “I’m goin to Graceland!!!” had been making us smile ever since we entered Tennessee, and finally standing behind those velvet ropes, soaking in as much gaudy fabulousness as one person can….Elvis crooning in the background…I felt like a real, true American, in the worst and best of ways. There’s no one quite like the King!!
See Kate’s take here!
